ALEXANDRIA, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 5, 2001--Metrocall, Inc.
(Nasdaq: MCLLC), one of the nation's largest wireless data and messaging
companies, will demonstrate its on-campus wireless networking capabilities
beginning today at the National Manufacturing Week trade show in
Chicago, IL. Metrocall's Systems Application Division custom-creates
onsite wireless networks that are ideal for the real-time communications
demands of manufacturing operations.
With the IRM, critical data and messages can be
sent using traditional paging methods, or from a designated central
PC-based server to a large defined group. The process is scalable
from one to several thousand devices. Units can be upgraded or replaced
in-house, which negates the need for third-party involvement. When
coupled with an onsite antenna, coverage is exceptional with transmission
time of approximately five seconds or less.
Manufacturing week attendees can learn more about
the recently introduced IRM 2.0 system by stopping by booth #4648
in the National Industrial Automation area of the exposition at
the McCormick Place complex. The new IRM 2.0 is distinct from previous
IRM systems because of its universal wireless platform, developed
by Metrocall partner Inciscent, which can transmit to any wireless
device, such as PDA's, two-way devices and PCS phones. Inciscent
is a wired-to-wireless full service ASP focused on the business-to-business
(B2B) market.
"Manufacturing facilities are large, complex, noisy
environments and are typically poor areas for external wireless
coverage," said Nancy Green, vice president of Metrocall's systems
application division. "Metrocall's IRM systems provide an alternative
to using overhead paging and phone extensions, as employees read
a transmitted message. With the aid of onsite transmitters, the
coverage problems are eliminated and message transmission is completed
to wireless devices extraordinarily fast."
During the past few months Metrocall IRM systems
have been installed at locations throughout the country, including
a BMW parts plant in South Carolina and at hospitals and medical
campuses. Casinos and municipalities have also chosen Metrocall's
IRM system because of its immediate response time and its transmission
capabilities in large buildings traditionally plagued by poor coverage.
