ALEXANDRIA, VA – Monday, February 11, 2002 -- Metrocall, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: MCLLQ), one of the nation's leading wireless data and messaging services, is connecting thousands of Olympic officials, security personnel and official sponsors during the next two weeks in Salt Lake City, Utah. More than one million spectators, workers and athletes are attending the XIX Winter Games at 14 venues spread throughout a 900 square-mile area.
Several hundred Metrocall My2Way wireless messaging devices are being utilized by the Utah Olympic Public Safety Command, a coalition of local, state and federal security agencies tasked with managing public safety at the Olympics. Additionally, 4,000 other Metrocall units are in use with private companies, such as sponsor, suppliers and visitors. To ensure adequate coverage within Utah's dramatic mountainous terrain, Metrocall's engineering teams have added extra tower sites and transmitters.
Metrocall's wireless messaging, and particularly its two-way interactive service, has proven to be indispensable when other communications systems have been overwhelmed or rendered inoperable. The reliability of Metrocall's networking capabilities have been recognized by federal, state and local medical, police, fire and rescue authorities for the critical role they filled during emergency operations on September 11th in New York and Virginia.
